Population and sample are used in gathering data whose analysis contributes to the purpose of a research study. Research studies are conceived in response to research gaps, to establish causality between variables, and to provide recommendations on the problem in the society. Studies rely on data analysis to establish relations between the dependent and independent variables; nonetheless, data analysis only occurs after data collection which features the definition of target populations and selection of appropriate sample sizes (Clark & Vealé, 2018). The relation between the purpose of the study and samples lies in reliance on ethics in both parts of the research. For example, considerations need to be made to ensure access to the proposed sample include maintaining the objectivity of the study and guaranteeing participants that their rights to withdraw from the study at will and without explanation will be upheld. According to Adhabi & Anozie (2017) failing to uphold ethics during the data collection process undermines the realization of the study’s purpose. The purpose of the study also determines the choice of the population and sample, for example regarding the topic on the efficacy of Karl Abraham’s psychoanalysis in the treatment of depression, the purpose of the study will inform the selection of the sample and population from individuals suffering from mental health issues._x000D_

I love ethics. Not only those who abide by them, of course, but I love teaching ethics. I was asked last year to write a chapter on the ethics of research methods – yesssss it is a thing!! — and there are so many places where this can go wrong. From sampling wrong to gathering data wrong to disseminating it wrong. Do you think most people at the dissertation stage are most likely to sample incorrectly / biased, take the data wrong (drift, bias, poor measuring tools, etc) or make incorrect conclusions about the results? _x000D_
