The situational approach to leadership presents effective leadership in a multi-versatile organizational environment with a variety of goals. This model best shows leaders how to respond to specific situational demands (Northouse, 2019). In essence, “different situations demand different kinds of leadership. From this perspective, to be an effective leader requires that a person adapt his or her style to the demands of different situations” (p.167). Northouse (2019) assumes that the follower’s skills and motivation are not uniform and change over time, so the leader must constantly change the way he leads depending on his followers’ needs. The leader can use “directive behaviors,” which is more authoritarian, and give orders and instructions on how tasks should be performed or can use “supportive behavior.” that offers more personal emotional, and encouraging support to the follower depending on the situation and the need (Northouse, 2019). Walls (2019) says that situational leadership can be described as the inter-relation between the task behavior (that is, giving instruction, direction, guidance and the relationship behavior), listening, support, and value” (p.32). Questionnaires are very effective in this approach because it asks the followers multiple questions relating to the task. The leader can use the answers to determine a more realistic style to use in each situation, and Northouse (2019) states that is one of the significant strengths of this approach. Other strengths are its simplicity in understanding and implementing, the straightforward course of action and path for leaders to follow in achieving goals, and that this method recognizes that there is no one best leadership style because problems and situations are constantly changing and dynamic; Hence, the leader has to be flexible and adapt depending on the situation (Northouse, 2019). Thompson and Vecchio (2009) say that its major disadvantage is that “although it is among the most widely-known theories in the domain of managerial leadership, Situational Leadership Theory (SLT) remains among the less well-substantiated models” (p.837)._x000D_
